Modern Work: hybrid working to the new standard

Our work environment has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years. Where full office work was once the norm, the Corona pandemic has led to a shift to more flexible work models. One of the most prominent things that has come out of this is hybrid working. But what exactly does hybrid working entail, what are the pros and cons, and how can modern technologies help make hybrid working as enjoyable and efficient as possible? In this blog, we dive deeper into these questions.

What is hybrid working?

Hybrid working combines working in the office with working remotely. This model offers employees the flexibility to choose where they work, depending on their tasks, personal preferences and organizational arrangements. The goal is to provide the best of both worlds: the collaboration and social interaction of an office environment and the flexibility and comfort of working from home.

Benefits of hybrid working

  • Flexibility and autonomy: Employees can adapt their work environment to their needs and preferences, leading to a better work-life balance. This flexibility can increase employee satisfaction and loyalty. (Source: Forbes)
  • Increased productivity: Research shows that employees are often more productive when they have the freedom to work in an environment that suits them best. Less time and stress due to commuting can increase focus and efficiency. (Source: A New Study Shows How To Maximize Hybrid Work Productivity (forbes.com))
  • Cost savings: Companies can save on office space and related costs. Employees save on travel and meal costs.
  • Wider talent pool: Companies are not limited to recruiting talent within their geographic location and can therefore attract the best candidates globally. This is especially true for companies that operate (almost) entirely remotely.

Disadvantages of hybrid working

  • Communication challenges. Physical distance can lead to communication problems and lack of cohesion within teams. It takes conscious effort and deployment of the right technology to ensure effective communication and bonding between them.
  • Availability of a good workplace. Not all workers have the space at home for a good, quiet workplace or the right resources to work well at home.
  • Progress monitoring and bonding between teams and organization. Managers need to find new ways to monitor performance and productivity without micromanaging. Furthermore, it is obviously very important to continue to foster connection between teams, individuals and the organization. Trust between employees and management is crucial.
  • Sense of loneliness. Due to decrease in (social) cohesion in the workplace, a significant proportion of employees (27%) experience loneliness
  • Blurring boundaries between work and home: Working from home can lead to a blurring of boundaries between work and home. This can work both ways, but it is important to carefully monitor how colleagues handle this and the state of work-life balance and perceived workload.

How hybrid work models increase productivity and satisfaction

  • Productivity: Hybrid work models can increase productivity by improving focus and concentration. Employees can work at times when they are most productive, in an environment that suits them best. This autonomy causes employees to be more motivated and feel more ownership over their work.
  • Satisfaction: Flexibility in work location and hours contributes to better work-life balance, which directly affects employee satisfaction. Employees who have control over their work environment typically report higher levels of job satisfaction and lower absenteeism.
  • Technology solutions for hybrid workplaces: Modern technologies play a crucial role in supporting hybrid work models. Here are some solutions that can ease the transition to hybrid working:

Tools and solutions for hybrid collaboration

  • Cloud-based productivity tools: Microsoft 365 offers a suite of "Modern Work" tools and apps, such as Teams, OneDrive, and SharePoint that enable collaboration, virtual meetings, calling, and access to documents from any location. These tools support real-time collaboration, which is essential for maintaining team cohesion.
  • Planning tools. Tools like Microsoft Planner help teams organize projects, assign tasks, and track progress. These tools provide transparency and insight into tasks and responsibilities, which is very important for hybrid team progress monitoring.
  • Security solutions. Hybrid work presents new security risks, but solutions such as Microsoft Defender help protect data and networks. Regular updates and security awareness training for employees are also essential to ensure cybersecurity.
  • Virtual workstations. Azure Virtual Desktop provides a complete virtual desktop environment that allows employees to access their work files and applications regardless of their location. This ensures a consistent work experience and increases productivity.

Hybrid working is the future

Hybrid working is more than a temporary trend; it is a new norm that helps companies be more flexible and resilient. By striking the right balance between working in the office and working from home, organizations can not only increase employee productivity and satisfaction, but also save costs through flexible scalability. Research shows that younger generations in particular need hybrid working and select a potential employer accordingly. With modern technology solutions, companies can overcome the challenges of hybrid working and maximize the benefits.
