What is a cloud infrastructure?

Cloud infrastructure may sound complicated, but it is actually quite simple. It is the basis of cloud computing and consists of servers, storage, networks and software that can be accessed over the Internet. This means you no longer need physical servers in the office because everything is provided virtually through a cloud provider, convenient right?

With a well-designed cloud infrastructure, your organization remains flexible and can scale up and down as needed. In addition, a move to the cloud not only provides secure storage for your data, but also helps meet legal requirements, such as AVG (General Data Protection Regulation). And it simplifies collaboration between employees, allowing them to work more efficiently and effectively. A lot of benefits, but what infrastructure is required for cloud computing? And what is infrastructure management? We explain to you what an infrastructure is and what's involved.

Requirements for a cloud infrastructure

If you are considering moving to the cloud, it is important to understand the infrastructure required for cloud computing. A cloud infrastructure consists of three basic components, namely:

  1. Physical hardware: Think servers, storage and networking equipment. Although these often reside in a cloud provider's data center, they are the backbone of your cloud environment.
  2. Virtualization: This technology allows you to divide physical hardware into multiple virtual resources. This allows you to run multiple virtual machines on a single server, increasing flexibility and efficiency.
  3. Networking: Fast, secure connectivity is critical. This includes both the physical network infrastructure and managing data transfers between users and the cloud.

In addition, software tools are needed for management, monitoring and security. Without these tools, it becomes difficult to keep your cloud environment running smoothly. Consider tools such as Microsoft Azure Portal, Azure Monitoring and the Microsoft Defender Suite.

The benefits of a good (cloud) infrastructure

A well-designed cloud infrastructure has a lot of benefits for businesses. We have listed some key reasons why it is worth the investment:

  • Flexibility and scalability: Whether you're growing or dealing with fluctuations in demand, cloud allows you to easily scale up or down.
  • Cost savings: You pay only for what you use. This eliminates large investments in hardware and lowers operational costs. Keeping a grip on your cloud costs is key, though. Read more: FinOps and Azure: get a grip on your cloud costs - Valid.
  • Reducing risks and costs: A structured approach helps reduce risks and costs of failed change.
  • Better security: Cloud providers such as Microsoft Azure invest billions in security. This means your data is often more secure than in an on-premises environment. Still, security remains a major concern even in Azure environments.
  • Anytime, anywhere access: With an Internet connection, you can work anywhere in the world. This is ideal for teams working remotely or hybrid.

So it's not just about technology, but also the benefits your business gains from it: less worry means more focus on growth.

Deployment models - public, private, hybrid and multicloud

Public cloud

This is probably the best-known form. You use the infrastructure of a third-party provider, such as Microsoft Azure. It is ideal for companies that want to scale up quickly without large hardware investments. Public clouds offer cost efficiency, reliability and ease of use.

Private cloud

With a private cloud, you manage the infrastructure yourself, whether it's on-premises or in a provider's data center. This model offers more control and is often the best choice for companies with strict security or compliance requirements. Think organizations in the financial or healthcare sectors.

Hybrid cloud

A combination of public and private cloud. This model allows you to keep sensitive data in a private cloud while leveraging the scalability and cost benefits of a public cloud. It offers maximum flexibility and a balance between security and cost.

Multi-cloud

Here you use multiple public cloud providers. This provides maximum flexibility and avoids dependence on one specific provider, but also requires proper strategy and management to minimize complexity.

Cloud infrastructure is the foundation on which modern businesses innovate and grow. It is more than just a technological move; it is a strategic decision that can transform your business. Whether you are just getting started with cloud computing and are curious about what infrastructure is required, or want to optimize your existing infrastructure, understanding this technology will help you make better decisions.
